Stroke signs and symptoms

Strokes can occur at any age. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 800,000 people in the United States suffer from strokes each year, and 87% of all strokes are ischemic. Ischemic strokes occur when blood flow to the brain is blocked. There are also hemorrhagic strokes, which are caused by a burst blood vessel in the brain.

Quickly recognizing the signs of a stroke can help save the life of you or a loved one. Remember to be FAST:

Accredited stroke care

As a Certified Primary Stroke Center accredited by the Joint Commission, we offer a high level of stroke care that patients can rely on. Our certification speaks to our readiness to provide a full spectrum of expert stroke care, from diagnosis to treatment, rehabilitation, and future prevention. The requirements to receive a Primary Stroke Center Certification are based on the most current recommendations set by the Brain Attack Coalition (BAC), American Heart Association (AHA), American Stroke Association (ASA), and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS).

Seton Medical Center Harker Heights is also a proud recipient of the AHA/ASA’s Get With the Guidelines Bronze Quality Achievement Award for 2020. Facilities that receive this prestigious award must meet rigorous standards to earn recognition as top-performers in stroke care and prevention.

Our stroke treatments and services

The skilled stroke doctors at Seton Medical Center provide treatments for transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) and ischemic strokes. If you or a loved one has had a hemorrhagic stroke, our doctors will stabilize your condition and then transfer you to an affiliated facility better equipped to treat hemorrhagic strokes.

Our stroke center offers a variety of services to treat and diagnose strokes. We offer teleneurology services, as well as in-house speech, physical and occupational therapy for stroke rehabilitation. We also provide diagnostic services to identify strokes and possible causes.

Our diagnostic imaging services include:

Computerized tomography (CT) — CT scans use X-rays to create detailed cross-sectional images of the brain and spine. These tests help doctors detect acute neurological conditions such as hemorrhages, tumors, and fractures.

Electrocardiograms (ECG) — Though ECGs are commonly used to diagnose heart conditions, they can also provide insights into neurological disorders affecting the heart’s electrical activity, like arrhythmias related to seizures.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) — MRIs use powerful magnets and radio waves to produce detailed images of the brain and spine, helping diagnose various neurological conditions including tumors, strokes, multiple sclerosis, and structural abnormalities.

The majority of our patients are first seen in the emergency room (ER). Depending on the type and severity of your stroke, you may be admitted to our stroke center for further stroke care.

If you or a loved one are experiencing symptoms of a stroke, call 911.
